DP Critique Sheet

This is a great event that allows you to either delve deep into the heart of characters or to be exaggerated and funny in a story.  The competitor creates an original interpretation of a published piece of literature (novel, play, or short story) in a 10 minute performance.  The performer must take the audience into the world of the characters that you create.

*It is important to note that in NCFL there is no separation between Humorous Interpretation and Dramatic Interpretation; the events are combined into the category of Dramatic Performance.  Despite separating at local NFCFL tournaments when the number of entries allows; the Grand Final tournament will have the two combined into Dramatic Performance.

Rules & Pointers

  • The selection used in the performance must be from a single work of literature-
one short story, one novel, or one play.
  • The performance should be within 10 minutes with a 30 second grace period.
  • Adaptations to material may only be used for the purpose of transition. The gender
stated by the author must be honored. However, a female contestant may play a
male role, and a male contestant may play a female role.
  • A student may not use a selection that they used in previous years of competition.
  • The performance must be done from memory.
  • The introduction must name the work and author, provide necessary background
information and establish the mood. If using a teaser, or if lines from the selection are used in the introduction, the speaker must adhere to the rules of the event.
  • Each character should be interesting, engaging and lifelike. The performer should create a physical, vocal and temperamental existence suited for each character. The performer should keep these choices consistent. The performer should use his or her face, eyes and body to create the characters effectively. Each character should show the intent of what he/she is wanting, thinking,
feeling and remembering when speaking and reacting. Characters should appropriately develop and/ or deepen as the plot or story line progresses.
  • Movement should be used to create a three-dimensional environment in which the characters exist.  Pantomime used should be accurate and realistic.
  • The transitions when moving from one character to another should be clean and crisp using popping. The pacing of transition should reflect the tempo of the interaction.
  • No props or costumes.
  • Use  focal points and/or direct contact with the audience to draw the audience in, but it should be reflected of the literature.
